About

Na was born in Gwangju and moved to many countries acquiring training and degrees until she finally settled in Germany where she has her current studio. She breaks the limits of graphic design by applying it to a 3D space. Kim identifies as a graphic designer but doesn't allow medium to confine her work. She finds it’s hard to create work that comes from inside her, so instead, she plays the role of her client to make the process easier. Her workspace is very important to her, having models and previous work around her to take reference from. Na Kim's process starts with a random image in her head which she builds upon using context, eventually connecting all of the elements together. Once she creates this system, she minimizes it to basic colors and shapes. That’s how she ends up with her minimalistic style.

Communication Through Her Work

Na Kim's uses her work to communicate ideas. She creates a connection between fine art and design. Her work has been in a number of spaces and she's produced things along with other designers such as 'Yellow Pages.' Kim has an abstract idea in her head and immediately tries to put it to form. She uses essential visual elements and uses "color, typography and image" to describe daily life. She emphasizes the importance of graphic design techniques but also the importance of craft. It is good to remain relevant without losing the original elements of graphic design; and using both to provide new ways to communicate.
